Adventure Trailers Announces Production of New JK Topper for Jeep JK 4-Door Wrangler

December 30th, 2009

Adventure Trailers has decided to expedite a project that they have been working on for awhile. The design & development of a JK Topper for the 4-door JK is something that we have been excited about for a long time, and now we are taking our concept from drawings and ideas to the actual product. Our design will be a single hardtop that will sleep two adults and two children in comfort, while retaining all the cargo and seating capacity of a stock 4-door JK.

The design will open forward over the hood with vertical supports down to bumper. The object of this opening direction is to not increase the footprint of the deployed vehicle & shell, important in close corners and brushy areas (or a parking lot for that matter).

Access to the sleeping platform will be through either of the rear passenger doors. The user will be able to fold the seats forward and then stand up between the 2 roll bars. A 60/40 split hatch that makes up the interior roof above the rear passenger seats will be removable and provide the access to the sleeping area. The reason we chose access in this manner was to keep the rear cargo intact for its intended purpose. Rear door access would mean that all cargo would have to be removed for access, undeniably, not very convenient and hence our design decision. When entering through this hatch, a platform will remain above the rear cargo area for staging bags, etc. The hatch can be replaced from inside the sleeping area if desired to increase the sleeping area for children.

We are using a fully breathable and waterproof tent fabric, light grey in color. This will eliminate the need for a separate storm cover. Tent windows will have a small awning, similar to those in use on RTTs today to allow for the windows to be partially open for ventilation during precipitation, a happy thing in humid environments. The fabric, sourced from Australia, is no stranger to rough use and harsh environments.

The interior of the shell when closed will have a hard ceiling giving one the sense that you are under a regular factory hardtop. The advantages of this will be good headroom and improved insulation. Those of you who have JKs know how anemic the A/C can seem on a hot day in the back seat because of the single wall thickness of the factory hardtop. The exterior finish will be standard black, similar to the factory and will be paintable for those who want matching colors. Factory glass and connections will be used for the rear door. Side windows will still be in place with an optional hard side insert that doubles as an external accessible compartment large enough to stow a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.

We expect the overall height of the top to only increase by 6” over the factory height.  Weight will be less than 100 lbs more than the factory hardtop. The top will attach using all of the factory hardware and can be easily put on in about 15-20 minutes. The shell can be customized by adding awnings to the sides. No provision for roof racks will be made, it would simply complicate opening and add to the COG, something we all prefer to avoid.

The targeted price point for the top will be $4400. The work for the prototype has begun and we are in the mold making phase. We expect to have the working prototype completed in Jan/Feb 2010. We are now accepting a 10% refundable deposit on pre-orders for a limited production batch of only 10 tops to be made. 2 of them are already spoken for our vehicles. We expect the remaining 8 tops to go quickly. They will be completed in the Spring, in time for the Overland Expo in Arizona. If you think you are ready for this cool solution to turn your JK 4 door into a truly self-contained vehicle, you can us at Adventure Trailers by visiting www.adventuretrailers.com or calling us at 1-877-661-8097.

JPFreek Becomes Exclusive North American Partner for World’s Most Challenging Expedition across Bering Strait

Houston, TX – JPFreek Adventure Magazine today announced a partnership with Extrem Events, a German expedition company, to become the exclusive North American media partner for Mattias Jeschke and his Transcontinental Expedition team. The partnership will provide Extrem Events a new and exciting digital medium to publicize its much-anticipated Transcontinental expedition, whose purpose is to promote CO2 neutrality and alternative energies. Extrem Events will also be working with JPFreek to expand its position within the North American Jeep community and to expand its Initiative Partner 15000 project to further build its sponsor base for the expedition.

The team, which earlier this year commenced a yearlong expedition that began in Paris and traveled all the way to Russia through Mongolia, is soon preparing the second leg of its journey. The journey will be climaxed by affixing a pontoon-style attachment to the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon vehicles used for the expedition to cross the Bering Strait. Once in Alaska, the team will be met by a third Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon piloted by JPFreek Adventure Magazine Editor-in-Chief Frank Ledwell, and will complete the remaining journey from the beginning point of the Pan-American highway, south through Alaska, and then across Canada into the United States to New York City.

Frank Ledwell said of the expedition and partnership, “Overlanding and Expedition-style travel is one of the fastest growing segments in the off-highway industry. The opportunity to join an experienced adventurer like Mattias Jeschke is not only an exciting prospect but also one that we are excited to share with the entire Jeep and off-highway community.”

The partnership is effective immediately and additional details about the partnership and community involvement will be announced in the near future.

National Parks: America’s Best Idea Documentary by Ken Burns Now Airing on PBS

October 1st, 2009

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales – from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska - The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background – rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.

Icon 4×4 Announces New CJ3B-Based Vehicle

September 26th, 2009

ICON CJ3B New Vehicle Press Release

It is written “ What is past is prologue”; with that in mind, we would like to announce our new ICON project, the ICON CJ3B. It’s nickname has become “The Dog”, i.e. … best friend! Just as current ICON FJ models trace their heritage to the vintage Land Cruiser, “The ICON Dog” is inspired by the Willys CJ3B. Immediately
following WWII, the civilian flat fender Willys was quickly covering terrain around the world.

The ICON CJ3B will maintain the fundamental design ethics of simplicity, value and utility infused in the original. Consistent with the ICON tradition, we have designed our own state of the art chassis, based on 2”x4” mandrel bent steel rails featuring coil over suspension. The drivetrain is a highly efficient variable valve timing GM Ecotec 2.4 fuel injected four cylinder motor, producing over 200HP and an estimated 28MPG. Power is delivered through an Aisin- Warner AX15 five speed transmission and NP231 transfer case to modified production Jeep Rubicon axles with four wheel disc brakes and locking differentials. Variable ratio power steering is standard, as are 31” tires with optional 33” tires for more aggressive uses.

The ICON CJ3B is all business and utility; with a significantly reduced wheelbase and vehicle weight (when compared to other ICON Models). The focus is on pure utility and agility with all of the quality you have come to expect in an ICON. With all systems built to the highest standards, “The Dog” is bound to find it’s way into the hearts and homes of clients around the world who are looking for a simple, bespoke, rugged utility vehicle.

As we are a small company with a strict focus on quality, we are currently focused on building a “Beta batch” of ten Dogs, all built by hand. This will allow us to fine tune the design before we enter full production, or introduce the Engineered Component Vehicle program (we dislike the stigma of “kit cars” so we will avoid that term!) This first batch will start with us recycling vintage Willy’s, so they will maintain the original title and registration. Our future production orders will fall under Specialty Construction Vehicle titling process. This first Beta Batch will be serial sequence tagged, with special trim, extensive options and unique details. They will be built with an emissions package (2009 GM HHR application service reference based) that does not adversely affect performance, while providing stellar reliability, exceptionally low emissions, and high MPG ratings.

Once we officially begin production of The Dog (1st Quarter of 2010), we anticipate a starting price point around $50,000 for our turn key vehicles. If you are familiar with our existing production FJ ICON vehicle line, they have set the standard for reviving classic American craftsmanship and industrial design quality in detail. Average ICON FJ sale is $130,000. The primary goal of The Dog was to offer a less expensive
(relatively…) vehicle with the same high level of engineering and construction quality, with a pure focus on simplicity, utility, and longevity. We are excited about the potentials of this platform, and are hard at work realizing variations already.

Soon we will begin selling the vehicle in kit form, through established distribution channels in the 4×4 and outdoor lifestyle markets. The various ICON CJ3B kits will likely range in cost from $15,000-$27,000.

Other development efforts in the works include a four wheel drive pure electric version with in wheel hub motors and a variable crawl ratio for optimum off-road performance.

The prototype is still under construction and will debut at SEMA in November 2009.
